Five Ways to Ruin an Application Essay’s Alison Damast contributes a forthright account of five mistakes in writing B-school essays, and clarifies how to avoid them.

Mistakes include:

  • Too much information
  • Ignoring rules
  • Showboating
  • Bad-mouthing others
  • The Shakespeare syndrome

Click here for details on each.

One thing I would add to the ignoring rules section is failing to answer the question. Admissions Directors around the country often comment that this is the biggest mistake an applicant can make!
